Top 10 Anticipated Films of 2015

Before this list begins counting down, I?d like to stress, as always, that this is my personal top 10. Also, I will be excluding ?Star Wars?, ?Jurassic World? and ?Avengers: Age of Ultron? from this list as every man and his dog are highly anticipating their respective returns. So, without further ado:

10. The D Train

dtrain

What is it about?

A high school reunion committee headmaster tracks down a popular, party-hard friend from his teenage years in order to convince him to attend the reunion. But something happens in between that leaves him a little confused.

Why should you be excited?

This got mixed reviews at the Sundance Festival, but it sounds wacky enough to be a cult hit. Jack Black returns as the protagonist so, if you are a fan of his, this will most definitely settle well with you. There are rumours going around of a pretty hilarious sexual encounter going on in this film, too, which has not been splurged out in a trailer. It seems stupid yet fun and, amidst all the thought-provoking and serious films in this list, it is very much needed.

9. Maggie

What is it about?

A girl falls infected during a zombie virus outbreak and her father ruptures boundaries to save his daughter.

Why should you be excited?

Arnold Schwarzenegger looks beaten down, old and troubled in this drama. He is finally attempting a serious role that involves no cheesy one-liners and punch lines, no gimmicks and no baby-oiled, gun-toting biceps. I don?t know if I?ll be able to take him seriously but the published images and trailer are telling me I will. If this works, it could take Arnie?s career in a completely different and refreshing direction. Also, it?d be nice to have a good zombie-drama.

8. Crimson Peak

What is it about?

Guillermo Del Toro?s latest horror is a ghost story revolving around Lady Lucille Sharpe (Jessica Chastain) and her attempts to escape the past. It is a period haunted house tale.

Why should you be excited?

Del Toro does horror like very few active in the genre. A ghost tale is right up his alley, shown in ?The Devil?s Backbone? ? one of his finest movies to date. This film boasts a great cast including Charlie Hunnam who is hot off the back of ?Sons of Anarchy? and Tom Hiddleston to mention a couple. The trailer reveals fragments of the story but, unlike most modern horror movies, shows very little frightening moments ? a good way to build tension and keep the audience on their feet. Additionally, it allows for the story to become a strong part of the film, rather than relying on cheap jump-scares. Knowing Del Toro, this will be extremely eerie and suspenseful. It could be the best horror movie of 2015 by a long, long distance.

7. Slow West

slow west

What is it about?

Slow West is a Western (go figure) set in the 19th century. It follows the story of 16-year-old Jay Cavendish (Codi Smit-McPhee) in search of a woman he loves. Accompanying him is a ?mysterious? man named Silas Selleck (Michael Fassbender).

Why should you be excited?

If Michael Fassbender alone doesn?t do it for you, then perhaps his mysterious character will. He?s practically accompanying this kid and saving his life (as seen in the trailer). This film feels eerily like ?Django Unchained? ? a modern-looking Western with bright colour palettes. It appears to have nuggets of comedy lodged between a dark and high-octane thriller. There is also an atmosphere of ?coming-of-age?. It looks like what would probably happen if ?Mud? and ?Django Unchained? had a baby. Are you sold?

6. Mad Max: Fury Road

mad-max-7-600x338

What is it about?

Two outlaw rebels team up to mend humanity and restore order in a post-apocalyptic world.

Why should you be excited?

Tom Hardy looks incredible as Max. The world, in the trailer alone, makes you feel dirty and as though you are intruding on a fast-paced, post-apocalyptic war. The action appears awash with gore but in a powerfully innovative and creative way. George Miller directed the old Mad Max films, so he naturally brings unequivocal passion and understanding of the story to the table. This could either be a huge success or yet another film where Tom Hardy carries the plot on his shoulders and just about crosses the finish line.

5. Child 44

CHILD 44

What is it about?

Set in the Stalin-era, ?Child 44? is about a man who loses his status after he refuses to incriminate his wife. The two join forces, along with a General, to locate a serial killer who preys on children.

Why should you be excited?

Yes, it?s Tom Hardy again. I can?t help it. He is one of the best actors of this generation and, fortunately, he?s been paired again with an excellent story. Oh, he also has a Russian accent. Anyhow, this promises to be a sincerely dark drama with serious issues, such as pedophilia and mental fragility, being tackled. Richard Price, who is writing the screenplay, wrote five episodes of crime drama ?The Wire? so he could add another layer of dimension to the law-enforcement side of the film. This is a serious contender for ?Best Adapted Screenplay? at The 2016 Oscars.

4. Southpaw

southpaw 2

What is it about?

A talented and successful boxer reaches the peak of his career, only to see that his life around him is crumbling.

Why should you be excited?

Jake Gyllenhaal will look to right-hook The Academy with this film. After harshly missing out on a nomination for last year?s ?Nightcrawler?, this could be his latest claim to one. I?m outrageously excited for this because it is written by Kurt Sutter. As a fan of ?Sons of Anarchy?, I know that Sutter can concoct great action as well as compelling dialogue. He can also meticulously create character from base to top. Gyllenhaal will definitely have a blast with this role. Aside from some raised eyebrows ? in regards to secondary character casting ? this has high potential. Like ?Warrior? but with boxing gloves. And that?s a good thing.

3. SPECTRE

james bond spectre daniel craig first look

What is it about?

Bond. Doing Bond-type stuff. You seriously do not need me to tell you what it is about.

Why should you be excited?

Bond. Doing Bon? ok, you actually want me to tell you why. Aside from Daniel Craig absolutely owning the role, this film succeeds three ridiculously excellent launches. Christoph Waltz as the villain ? need I say more? This guy may very well win yet another ?Best Supporting Actor? award. He is incredibly intelligent and oozes something quite intangibly exciting. I wouldn?t be surprised ? and these are very strong words that I am about to type ? if this turns out to be the best Bond film to date. I mean that. Look at you, getting all excited?

2. Inside Out

Inside out

What is it about?

This is Pixar?s return: an animated film about a girl who moves cities and is, naturally, overcome by her emotions. Most of the film takes part inside her mind ? the headquarters ? where all of her emotions battle it out for control of her.

Why should you be excited?

This looks funny, genuine and it is something we have never seen before. Do yourself a favour and watch the trailer. It looks like it could provide an excellent social commentary about human feeling and emotion behind the veil of animation and comedy. Pixar could squash every single animated movie scheduled for release this year, even if that means their very own ?The Good Dinosaur?, which releases a few months after this.

1: The Hateful Eight

What is it about?

Following the civil war, eight bounty hunters are all sharing one specific area, in refuge, due to a blizzard. They become embroiled in a ?plot of betrayal and deception? [IMDB].

Why should you be excited?

Quentin Tarantino is incapable of making a bad film. Eight characters, each with their own story sounds like too much to cover, right? Not unless you?re Tarantino, a man who creates dialogue and character development like none other. This is going to be a hit. And it will receive heaps of Oscar nominations. The script leaked online last year which, at first, forced Tarantino to announce that he was no longer going to continue with it. But such was the quality of the story that fans? uproar caused the director to give it the green light again. Now, Tarantino is a ludicrously stubborn man ? just watch his interviews ? so the story must be incredible to the point where he had to put his attitude aside and create it.
